Lenticular Lenses

Lenticular Lenses

As a result, scientists have developed new technology that possibly takes off the 3D glasses to enjoy a 3D movie with our own naked eye. This technology is being officially known as Lenticular lenses. The so-called technique is referred to the “Autostereoscopy”, which is the way its projecting 3D images without the requirement of 3D glasses or any headgears. When they enable 3D features on the lenticular display, it helps the “parallax barrier” to direct each light to your naked eye. Movie theaters won’t have a giant display that is only for playing 3D movies as all our movies are not being released in the 3D format. When they have to play the normal 2D film on a glassless 3D display, they just turn off its 3D feature to play it in a normal mode that illustrates the 2D effect.

Our brain has a major role for enjoying the glassless 3D illusion. The glassless 3D screen breaks the light of the movie sequences. In fact, we see two different images at the same time with their light are being blocked to reach both our eyes at the same time. That creates 3D motions with a higher illusion of depth on our brains. Glassless TVs are being made in a similar process, whereas Lenticular screens have such a narrow set of viewing angles.

The first to use this new illusion was the Nintendo 3DS gaming console which is a gaming device to run glassless 3D experience. The Nintendo Entertainment System launched this product in Japan in February 2011 and by June 2017, they have sold more than 67 million units worldwide. This product can perform 3D features in multiple ways and its glassless 3D motion is so sharp because of its parallax LCD barriers.  The parallax barrier they use in the Nintendo 3DS is illustrated on the below picture.

The glassless 3D motion works the similar way as it explained on the 3D display above. However, you have to look at its screen in a specific view to properly enjoy the glassless 3D mode. Whereas the larger displays like movie theaters and smart televisions are using the latest technology of Lenticular lenses to enjoy the 3D movies without the help of any gadgets or glasses. The popular television manufacturers such as Toshiba, Sharp, Sony, Vizio, and LG have already showcased glassless 3D television at various trade platforms. However, Toshiba was the only company that briefly marketed this glassless 3D television in the Asian Markets.

The Lenticular technology helps us to get rid of the 3D glasses but it filmmakers has more job to do this time. The sequences they shoot must be compatible with the larger Lenticular displays on the cinema theaters. But experts claim that there can be motion blur if you are not in a sweet position to watch the movie. This problem can be caused by the largest size of theater displays. However, they are working on a tracking camera which can track multiple viewers and their position to produce a quality glassless 3D effect and it makes you move without troubling your vision.
